Things often get stressful in business. Things go wrong, curve ball events occur, and it can all get a bit tense sometimes. What one needs in those situations is calm! Strongly emotional responses, especially anger, fear, and frustration will tend to lead to poorer decision making.

Often these emotions lead to snap decisions to quickly remove the source of stress rather than solving the actual cause of the problem. It is important to remember that these might be different things. For example if a customer is getting cross about a late order, the source of the stress is the customer getting stressed but that is not the reason why the parcel was late. When we are gripped by emotion we will quickly try and solve the stress perhaps by offering the customer a free next day delivery but that does nothing at all to solve the cause of the problem. A lack of calmness gets in the
way of problem solving.

Unleashing the potential of your business can be helped greatly by addressing problems in a calm way. Often potential can be inhibited by succumbing to emotion and drama.

1 TRAIN IN CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
Train people in conflict management techniques like the Drama Triangle. The drama triangle is a
great tool for making people aware of how their mindset can contribute to very stressful problem
solving and, more importantly, how there is a better, calmer and more productive way to resolve even the most stressful situation.

2 ELIMINATE BLAME FROM YOUR CULTURE
Eliminate blame to remove stress. Businesses often encourage a non-calm approach by having a blame culture. If a problem occurs and everyone thinks they will be blamed and punished then of course it’s going to get stressful. We get the phenomena of blame-storming where everyone tries to work out how it’s someone else’s fault rather than solving the actual problem. This is all very stressful.

3 DEMONSTRATE TRUST
Build trust by showing that we have our people’s backs even if things go wrong. The best way to ensure calmness is to demonstrate trust in your employees so they know that they are supported if things go . That way they can tackle problems with a clear head and are not distracted with worry about getting in trouble with the boss.
